Another reason to go to gemba
Yesterday was another lesson in how important it is to go to gemba. After it was reported to me that it was impossible to get a piece of equipment into the facility, I said, "OK, let's go and see."
My manager and I walked around looking at a number of options. Members of the facility team also began looking for options. After some time, my manager and I came upon one option that look extremely promising. After some discussion, we agreed the equipment could make it into the facility. Pleased, we went to join the rest of the surveying team to show them what we had found.
Then something amazing happened, one of the security guards said, "Excuse me. There's something I want to show you." He led us to an exit that none of us knew was there. It led directly to a ramp from which the equipment could be unloaded and brought into the facility. Had we not gone to gemba, and encountered this engaged employee, we would have never realized how simple the solution really was.
